BUENA VISTA, Va. – The 11
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team plated three runs in the 11
th inning for an 8-5 victory over Southern Virginia in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Thursday afternoon.
Frostburg (13-4, 1-1 CAC) picked up its first conference victory of the season behind eight runs on 13 hits. Southern Virginia (9-10, 1-3 CAC) sent the game to extras after bringing home the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior infielder Patrick Bosley handed Frostburg a 6-5 lead in the eleventh with a groundout to second that scored the go-ahead run from third base. Frostburg would go on to score two more runs in the extra frame for the 8-5 final.
Bosley posted one hit and two RBI, marking his fifth game of the season with multiple RBI. He is tied with junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann and senior Logan Corrigan for the most multiple RBI games on the team.
Senior outfielder Matt Bougourd paced Bobcat batters with five hits, including two doubles, in his sixth game of the season with multiple hits.
Bougourd tied a single-game school record for hits and continues his torrid pace with the bat against the Knights. Bougourd is the second Bobcat player to collect a five-hit game this season after senior outfielder Kyle Burger did it against Penn State Abington on February 16.
In three games, the Riviera Beach, Md. native has collected 12 knocks in 15 career at-bats against Southern Virginia. In addition to his .800 career batting average against the Knights, Bougourd has eight RBI, seven runs scored, two home runs and six doubles at the plate.
Bougourd was one of three players to put together a multi-hit performance, with Fuhrmann and senior infielder Mike Takovich recording a pair of knocks each.
Senior pitcher Daniel Richardson made his second start of the 2018 campaign on Thursday against the Knights. He went 6.0 frames, allowing four runs (three earned) with a season-high seven strikeouts.
He gave way to sophomore Michael Livingston, who closed the game out with 5.0 innings of stellar relief work. The Frostburg, Md. native cruised, allowing just four hits and one earned run with a career-high five strikeouts.
Livingston (2-0, 3 SV) has gone multiple innings in five of his seven relief appearances. He has allowed just eight hits over the last 12 innings, lowering his ERA to 1.62 while limiting opposing batters to a .224 average.
The Bobcat pitching staff worked their way out of multiple jams, including a bases loaded situation with one out in the seventh for Livingston.
Southern Virginia struck first for a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Frostburg responded with a five-run outburst that spanned the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Bosley tied the game at one in the second with a sacrifice fly to left. Senior Greg Schneider singled and advanced to third on an error, allowing senior outfielder Evan Colon to score for a 2-1 lead in the third. Fuhrmann grounded to short the next at-bat, allowing Schneider to score from third for a 3-1 Frostburg advantage.
Schneider reached base in the fourth on an error, allowing Takovich to score for a 4-1 edge.
Bougourd led off the fifth with a single and advanced to third on a single from Bosley with one out in the fifth. Bougourd eventually scored on a wild pitch as Frostburg extended its lead to 5-1.
SVU would not go quietly, scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, cutting the deficit to just one at 5-4. The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out. With a runner on first and the potential game-winning run on second, Livingston recorded a strikeout and lineout to keep the game knotted at five.
With darkness looming, Frostburg pushed its lead back to three in the eleventh inning. The Bobcats started the inning with back-to-back singles and a groundout from Bosley scored Fuhrmann for a 6-5 edge. Takovich doubled in the next at-bat, scoring Bougourd from second for a 7-5 lead before first-year infielder Bret Fogle reached on an error that scored Takovich for the 8-5 advantage.
Fogle, who made his fourth start of the season, went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk. Livingston closed the game with a pair of groundouts before SVU notched a double. The final out of the game was a ground ball back to Livingston, who went to first for the easy out to seal the win.
