MARIETTA, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Frostburg State baseball team slipped against No. 21 Marietta, 10-1, on Monday evening at Don Schaly Stadium.
Frostburg (12-4) recorded one run on six hits, but were bested by 10 & 11, respectively, from the Pioneers (12-4), who used a five-run spurt between the second and third innings to earn the win in the top-25 matchup.
Impending weather forced the game to Monday (originally slated for Tuesday), creating a short notice back-to-back scenario for Frostburg. Frostburg drops to 2-1 overall against ranked opponents this season.
The Bobcats had a balanced offensive approach as six different players recorded a hit. No player was able to collect multiple hits and Frostburg was limited to its lone run in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats scored in the fifth following a single through the right side by senior Kyle Burger. Burger advanced to second on an error, allowing senior Mike Takovich to score on the play as Frostburg trailed 5-1.
Senior RHP Greg Schneider started the game on the mound for the Bobcats, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing a season-high five runs (two earned) on six hits. Schneider had walked just six batters entering the game, but walked six in his shortest outing of the season.
Marietta pushed across two runs in the second inning for a 2-0 lead and took advantage of three walks in the third for three runs and a 5-0 margin.
Burger, Takovich, senior outfielder Matt Bougourd, senior designated hitter Logan Corrigan, senior infielder Patrick Bosley and junior infielder Brock Antognoni each recorded one hit for Frostburg. The Bobcats were held under the five-run mark for just the second time this season.
