Bobcats Drop CAC Opener To CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg kept things close in the early going in its CAC opener with Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Captains eventually pulled away for a 22-8 victory.
 
The Bobcats (3-5-1) tied the game twice inside the first five minutes and hung tough with CNU (4-5) through nearly 20 minutes of action in the first half.
 
Starting at 10:13, Christopher Newport rattled off five consecutive goals for an 11-4 cushion with 5:09 to play.
 
Sophomore Molly Biggers scored back-to-back goals at 4:08 and again at 3:13 to pull Frostburg to within 11-6 late in the opening half.
 
The Captains closed the half with the final three goals for a 14-6 lead at intermission and the visitors continued that surge into the second half with the first four goals for an 18-6 lead.
 
The first-year tandem of Jara Matlick and Stephanie King connected for a goal at 18:11 that ended the seven-goal run and pulled the Bobcats to within 18-7.
 
Matlick later brought the scoring to a close with the game's final tally with 4:00 showing in the second.
 
Biggers led Frostburg with three goals. Her first of the afternoon knotted things at 1-1 just 1:48 into the game. King finished the game with two scores and her first of the afternoon tied the game at 2-2 at 26:01.
 
Matlick finished with one goal and two assists, while junior Morgan Cavey and first-year Summer Cavey each scored once.
 
Summer Cavey paced the Bobcats with six draw controls, while junior keeper Abigail McClure suffered the loss in net after making six saves in 30 minutes.
 
Eight different players scored for the Captains and they were led by Sarah Culver's five first-half goals.
 
Frostburg returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Marymount at 1:00 pm.
