WASHINGTON, D.C. – The ninth-ranked Frostburg State baseball team opened up an early lead and held on late for a narrow 10-8 triumph over Gallaudet Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field.
Frostburg (12-3) is now 5-1 in games played on Sunday this season and have outscored Gallaudet (3-15-1) 71-41 over the last eight meetings.
The Bison had the tying run at second in the ninth, but sophomore Mike Livingston closed out the game for Frostburg. Three different Bobcats posted multiple hits at the plate.
Senior pitcher Lane Ward made the start on the mound and allowed just two hits in five innings. Ward surrendered three runs and while striking out five. Junior Marco Cardone tossed 2.0 innings out of the bullpen while junior Dan Ryczek and Livingston threw one inning each.
Frostburg used a big second inning to surge ahead for an early 4-0 lead. The Bobcats did their damage in the second inning with two outs as senior infielder Patrick Bosley started the offense with a single up the middle. After a walk to senior Colton Sivic, junior catcher Garrett Blank jumped on a 1-1 with a double to left to put Frostburg up 2-0. Senior outfielder Kyle Burger singled to put runners at first and third and senior outfielder Greg Schneider cleared the bases with a single through the left side for a 4-0 edge.
The double for Blank handed him his first career hit and RBI in a Frostburg uniform while Schneider notched his second, third and fourth RBI of the season. The four-run inning marked the sixth time this season the Bobcats have recorded four runs in a single frame.
Gallaudet responded with a run in the third and fourth inning, cutting the Frostburg State lead to 4-2. Schneider singled up the middle in the fourth, plating two more runs for a 6-4 advantage. Schneider wrapped up the day 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
The Bison tacked on another run in the fifth inning before the Bobcats, who were the home team in this matchup, added a run on a sacrifice fly from Bosley in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-4 lead.
Gallaudet rallied to tie the game at seven with four runs in the eighth inning but once again Frostburg took control in the bottom of the frame, plating three runs for a 10-7 edge.
Senior outfielder Kyle Burger scored on a wild pitch to give Frostburg an 8-7 lead and senior Logan Corrigan plated two more as the Bobcats went up 9-7. Junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann capped the inning with a single through the left side to hand Frostburg a 10-7 lead. The Bison capped the scoring with a run in the ninth for the 10-8 final.
Fuhrmann made his return to the lineup on Sunday and went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a walk. He leads the team with seven multiple-hit games this season.
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday, March 27 when it travels to Marietta at 3:30 p.m.
