BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team dropped two games in a non-conference doubleheader against Bridgewater, Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats endured a 4-1 loss in game one, with an 11-5 loss in game two.
With the two losses, Frostburg falls to 11-7 overall, while Bridgewater improves to 13-9 overall.
In game one, the Bobcats totaled six hits, one RBI, and left seven runners on base in 26 at-bats, while the Eagles posted seven hits, four RBI, and six runners left on base in just 25 at-bats.
Senior Allison Short suffered the loss in the circle dropping her overall record to 6-3 while allowing four earned runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts facing 28 batters in 6.0 innings.
Senior Brittney Platt led the Bobcats at the plate batting 2-for-3, with a double and one run batted in, while classmate Sam Gatton notched two hits in four at-bats also with a double.
Frostburg notched the first run of the contest in the top of the second inning off a Platt double, scoring sophomore Katelyn Mehrling from second base giving Frostburg a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Eagle's Keirsten Kennedy hit a three-run home run to give Bridgewater a 3-1 lead, while they added their final run in the bottom of the third inning facing two outs as Mariah Wharton singled to left field and scored Carlita Tibbs for a 4-1 lead.
In game two, Mehrling was credited with the loss in the circle as her overall record falls to 2-2, as she allowed two earned runs on six hits in 1.1 innings pitched. First-year Ally Weiman completed the game allowing six earned runs and eight hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
The Bobcats notched 11 hits and left nine runners on base, while Bridgewater generated 14 hits and left eight runners on base.
Weiman led the Bobcats at the plate, batting 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while first-year Sam Carver tallied two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
In the bottom of the first inning, Bridgewater scored the game's first run as Tibbs singled to right field, scoring Morgan Landes from third base. The Eagles pushed across four runs in the bottom of the second inning on five hits and one Frostburg error to take a 5-0 lead.
The Bobcats scored their first run of the game in the top of the third as Carver crossed the plate on a wild pitch cutting the lead to 5-1. In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles scored four more runs as Tibbs singled to left field and batted in two runs expanding Bridgewater's lead to 9-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Bobcats scored two runs off a Wieman double and a Platt single that scored first-year Shylo Arneson and Wieman respectively, cutting the lead to 9-4. In the inning, the Bobcats recorded four hits but left three runners stranded on base.
Frostburg is back in action Wednesday as it travels to Southern Virginia for its Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) season opener set for 4:00 p.m.
