FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A huge 10 run fourth inning coupled with a quality start from junior Brady Adam spurred the Bobcats to a weekend opening win, 15-2, over New Rochelle College Friday afternoon from J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C.
Frostburg (4-1) scored 15 runs on 16 hits and one error while New Rochelle (0-2) scored two runs on four hits and two errors.
Adam tossed six strong innings, racking up 15 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run and one walk. He struck out 10 batters in a row from the first through fourth innings, striking out the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings. Junior Marco Cardone finished off the game with three innings of work, fanning six batters and allowing one run which was unearned.
The 15 K's for Adam matches an individual high for the team this season, tying Senior Greg Schneider who recorded 15 on February, 16. The combine 21 strikeout tops the team high from that same game of 20, making it the most by a Bobcat team dating back to 1995, the first year team game-by-game strikeouts totals were kept as an official record at Frostburg and the most by a team in Division III this season. Adam has struck out 22 batters in just nine and two-thirds innings so far this season.
Four Bobcats recorded at least two hits on the day with senior Kyle Burger leading the way with a four hit outing and one RBI. Senior Matt Bougourd, junior Nick Fuhrmann, junior Brock Antognoni and senior Patrick Bosley each notched two hits on the day with Bougourd, Antognoni and Bosley bringing home two, three and three runs respectively.
Frostburg conceded the first run of the game but then went on to score 15 unanswered runs over the next seven innings.
Following a New Rochelle run in the top of the 1
st, the Bobcats responded with a run of their own in the bottom half as Bougourd laced a line drive to left that scored Burger from second.
Three more runs came across in the third all with two outs in the inning. With runners on first and second junior Matt Thomas ripped a ball to left that scored Fuhrmann. After senior Logan Corrigan scored on a balk, Bosley picked up an RBI on a single to left that brought home Thomas from second.
The offensive onslaught continued for FSU in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 10 runs in the inning. Antognoni picked up two RBI on a hard hit double to left and came around to score on a Bougourd single the next at bat. After four runs scored on an error, two walks and a hit by pitch, Burger singled to left with the bases loaded bringing home Bosley. Antognoni picked up his third RBI of the inning as senior Colton Sivic scored on a fielder's choice making it 13-1. One more run would come across in the inning with Burger scoring on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats notched one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a Bosley RBI single to left and New Rochelle mustered one more run in the top of the 8
th to make the final 15-2.
FSU returns to the diamond on a quick turnaround tomorrow, February 24 against Rutgers-Newark from Fayetteville, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
