FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Frostburg State baseball team ended the weekend on a high note as they held on for a 7-5 victory over Stevenson in Fayetteville on Sunday afternoon.
Frostburg, which wraps up its opening weekend with a 3-1 record, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the contest.
Senior left-hander Logan Corrigan tossed 4.1 innings while allowing just one run. Corrigan got ahead in the count early with 15 first-pitch strikes with 10 of those at-bats resulting in outs.
Junior Brady Adam was impressive in 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts. Adam earned the victory in an efficient outing that lasted 63 pitches where he got five batters out on three pitches or less.
Offensively, the Bobcats had three players with multiple hits. Junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in three, while junior catcher Jason Paredes went 2-for-3.
A three-run third inning proved to be the difference for Frostburg. Fuhrmann singled home senior outfielder Matt Bougourd for a 2-0 lead before Paredes handed Frostburg a 3-0 lead with a single. Senior outfielder Evan Colon continued his hot start to the season with a single to right as Frostburg expanded its lead to 4-0.
Fuhrmann, who powered the Bobcat offense, smacked a double to left field in the fifth for a 5-1 edge. Fuhrmann is hitting at a .533 clip with one home run and 8 RBI through the first four games.
Paredes collected his second RBI of the day in the fifth inning with a single that scored Fuhrmann as Frostburg went up 6-1. Fuhrmann capped his big day in the sixth inning with a single to left that scored senior Kyle Burger for a 7-2 edge. Junior infielder Brock Antognoni was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Stevenson crawled back into the game with three runs in the ninth inning, cutting the score to 7-5, before sophomore Mike Livingston got Michael Rhodes to pop up for the two-run victory.
The Bobcats will take a brief break from game action before returning to Fayetteville for a matchup with New Rochelle on Friday, February 23 at noon.
