Softball Drops a Pair of Games in N.C.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Frostburg State softball team dropped a pair of contests in its season opener Saturday to Brandies 11-5 and Salem 10-0.  

In the game one loss to Brandies, the Bobcats totaled 12 hits with 10 runners left on base, while the Judges logged 15 hits and also left 10 runners on base.

First-year Sam Carver tallied three hits on four at-bats with one run scored.

The Bobcats trailed 2-0 after the first inning as Brandeis' Marissa DeLaurentis doubled to center scoring two runs. Frostburg answered in the second inning as senior Allison Short hit a single scoring first-year Taylor McCarty, while senior Sam Gatton scored on a passed ball knotting the game at two.

Brandeis poured in four runs in the third inning on four hits to take a 6-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, senior Brittney Platt recorded a double, scoring junior Olivia Ford from first to cut the lead to 8-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats were only able to generate one run from McCarty for the final run of the game.

Short struckout one batter in 2.2 innings pitched allowing six earned runs, while sophomore Katelyn Mehrling allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

In game two, the Bobcats endured a 10-0 loss to Salem.

Frostburg State registered four hits, but stranded four runners on base for the game, while Salem recorded 12 hits and left eight runners on base.

McCarty recorded two hits in three at-bats, while Gatton and first-year Ally Wieman both logged one hit.

In the fourth inning, McCarty notched a double with one out, but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize with two-straight flyouts.

Wieman struckout one batter in 5.0 innings and gave up eight hits with six earned runs, while Short added one strikeout in 1.0 innings pitched.

Salem scored six of its 10 runs in the first two innings on just seven hits.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow against Shenandoah at 10:00 a.m. followed by a rematch with Brandeis at 12:00 p.m.
