Men’s Basketball Clinches Five Seed in CAC Tournament with Senior Day Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team and head coach Webb Hatch wrapped up the regular season in style with a 91-74 victory over Wesley in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Saturday afternoon at a raucous Bobcat Arena.  
 
Frostburg (11-14, 9-9 CAC) clinches a spot in the CAC Tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season with the victory. Frostburg will be the fifth seed, while Wesley (13-12, 9-9), who had three players in double figures and will enter the conference tournament as the six seed.
 
The Bobcats recognized their six seniors (Christopher Coston, Jordan Johnson, Darren Campbell, Jeffery McMorris, Dalton Gaus and Tyler Michael) along with head coach Webb Hatch, who is coaching his final season at Frostburg, before the start of the contest in an emotional pregame ceremony.
 
Frostburg was extremely efficient from the floor, going 35-of-66 (53%) from the field, including 18-of-32 (56.3%) in the second half.
 
Junior forward Edwin Cole posted a career and game-high 23 points and was one of four Bobcats in double figures. Michael and Coston chipped in 21 and 14 points, respectively, while sophomore Daniel Alexander added 11 points.
 
Michael scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half while Coston sparked Frostburg with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the opening frame. Alexander stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block in 36 minutes.
 
Wesley opened the game with an 8-3 scoring run in the first half before the Bobcats settled in for a 16-14 lead at the 12:48 mark. Alexander converted a layup at 11:33 for a 20-14 edge and back-to-back baskets from Gaus handed FSU a slim 28-26 lead.
 
Michael handed Frostburg a 43-35 lead with just 33 seconds remaining in the opening half. Cole opened the scoring in the second half with a three-point play as the Frostburg lead ballooned to 46-35. Cole scored the first seven points for the Bobcats in the second half.
 
Sophomore guard Lawrence Pettis, Jr. nailed a three at 15:20 as the Bobcats pulled away with a 57-37 edge. Michael connected from behind the arc about three minutes later as the Frostburg lead swelled to 21, 64-43.
 
Frostburg maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half, thanks in large part to the duo of Cole and Michael.
 
For Frostburg, Gaus finished with seven points while Pettis chipped in eight with six assists.
 
Brian Cameron and JW Lawson led the Wolverines with 13 points each.
 
Frostburg will travel to face fourth-seeded Mary Washington on Tuesday, February 20. A full preview will be released early next week.
