BUENA VISTA, Va. – Sophomore Victoria Diggs totaled 22 points and Frostburg got back in the win column with a 71-63 road win over Southern Virginia, Wednesday.
The contest marked the final road game of the regular season for the Bobcats as they pushed their record to 11-13 overall and 7-10 in the league.
The win also assures Frostburg the sixth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament that starts next Tuesday. A full preview will be available prior to the first round.
The differential in the win over the Knights (12-12, 5-12) came at the three-point line and at the charity stripe. The Bobcats connected on six threes and were 15-of-21 at the foul line.
The Frostburg defense allowed just one three-pointer from Southern Virginia and eight made free throws. Frostburg also outscored the hosts 36-30 over the final two quarters after leading 35-33 at intermission.
Diggs, the CAC's third leading scorer, poured in 20-plus points for the first time in three games. Her 22 points came on 5-of-10 from the field, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 at the foul line.
Sophomore Sydney Stotler scored 11 points with seven rebounds, while first-year Kayla Wilson added 10 points. Junior Amber Downey led FSU with nine rebounds.
The Bobcats trailed just once in each half and opened the first quarter on a 7-0 run behind four points from Wilson. After Southern Virginia rebounded for a 13-12 cushion later in the first junior Megan Kelly connected on a three-pointer with 1:18 left for another seven-point lead (20-13).
Midway through the second, Diggs hit a three-pointer for Frostburg's third eight-point cushion of the frame, 32-24. She later hit another three with 57 seconds left that helped Frostburg hold on to a two-point lead at the break.
The early moments of the third quarter saw four ties and the hosts captured their second and final lead of the afternoon at 41-39.
Frostburg rebounded with an 8-0 spurt later in the quarter for a nine-point lead, 54-45. Diggs scored the final four points during the outburst.
Sophomore Victoria Yoder opened the fourth with a jumper 55 seconds into play as Frostburg led by a game-high 11, 60-49. The Bobcats held their lead over five points the entire frame and never let SVU make a charge.
Diggs helped seal the win with seven free throws (7-of-8) inside the final two minutes.
Katie Garrish led the hosts with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Shelby Butler added 15.
