YORK, Pa. - The resilient Frostburg State women's basketball team held tough despite a poor shooting performance in the first half against York (Pa.), and kept things close in a narrow 66-61 loss Tuesday evening at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in the CAC Tournament.
Frostburg, the six seed, caps its season at 12-14 after making its second-straight appearance in the conference tournament. Fourth-seeded York (Pa.) moves to 18-8 and advances to face second-seeded Christopher Newport on Tuesday in the CAC Semifinals.
Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs, the leading scorer in the conference, turned in a spirited effort with 28 points on 8-of-17 shooting and 5-of-11 from three-point range. She poured in 23 of her 28 points in the second half as the Bobcats attempted to rally late in the contest.
The Spartans held the rest of the Bobcats in check offensively. Frostburg went 9-of-37 (24.3%) from the floor as a team in the first half and made just two threes in each of the first two quarters.
Overall, the Bobcats finished 20-of-72 (27.8%) from the field and 9-of-26 (34.6%) from beyond the arc.
The hosts opened the game on an 11-0 scoring run before the Bobcats cut the score to 21-11 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, a three from Diggs at 8:42 brought Frostburg to within seven (24-17) and a layup from senior Adjowa Pinkrah cut the deficit to just five (24-19) with 6:50 left in the half.
Consecutive baskets for Pinkrah at 7:41 and 7:08 closed the Frostburg deficit to five each time before the hosts countered back with a double-digit lead at the end of the third quarter. Pinkrah finished with eight points and scored six in the third quarter.
Diggs attempted to will the Bobcats back in the fourth quarter with back-to-back threes to make it 59-52. Diggs scored the final seven points for Frostburg as the Spartans iced the game away at the foul line. York went 8-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final quarter.
