Frostburg Men Drop Close Game At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Frostburg men made a handful of late charges against Southern Virginia, Wednesday, but the Bobcats endured a 73-66 loss to the Knights.
 
The Bobcats settle at 10-14 overall and 8-9 in the CAC after suffering their fourth-straight loss.
 
Frostburg cut its deficit to one, 57-56, with 5:32 left after a three-pointer from senior Tyler Michael. The Bobcats later used a 9-2 run that was capped by a traditional three-point play from sophomore Daniel Alexander as they cut the deficit to just three, 69-66, with 37 seconds left.
 
Southern Virginia (11-13, 6-11) connected on four free throws inside the final 34 seconds and the defense survived three Bobcat three-point attempts for the win.
 
Michael powered the Bobcats offensively with 15 points, while Alexander added 13. Junior Edwin Cole poured in his third-straight and eighth double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Southern Virginia made 17-of-22 free throws, while the Bobcats finished just 5-of-12 at the charity stripe. The Bobcats made three more baskets from the field than the hosts, but the difference came at the free-throw line.
 
The game featured a total of five ties and nine lead changes, but all that happened in the first half as Frostburg was unable to grab a lead in the second.
 
Frostburg held four leads in the opening stanza, but never led by more than two points. Alexander hit a jumper at 9:14 for a 16-14 edge and Cole tipped home a missed basket for a 25-23 lead.
 
Senior Dalton Gaus later connected on a three-pointer that tied the game at 32-32 with 2:55 left until halftime. Southern Virginia closed the first with an 8-0 run for a 40-32 lead at the break.
 
Aarun Rumbaugh led the Knights with 16 points, while Same Armstrong finished with 13.
 
The Bobcats will close out their regular season on Saturday with senior day against Wesley at 3:00 pm.
