FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team picked up a win against Juniata, 56-52, in a home non-conference mid-week game, Wednesday.
The victory moves Frostburg to 5-2 overall on the young season while Juniata fell to 2-4 overall.
The Bobcats got things rolling behind a lay-in by junior guard Victoria Yoder to give Frostburg an early lead. Frostburg built its lead behind a 10-0 run in the first six minutes.
The FSU defense held the Juniata offensive attack in check by causing the Eagles to miss their first nine field goal attempts and forcing eight turnovers. The defense converted to offense as the Bobcats had six points off of turnovers in the first stanza.
Juniata ended the first quarter without scoring from the field or free throw line.
The second quarter started with a three-pointer by junior guard Victoria Diggs. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run leading to a Bobcat timeout.
After the timeout, Frostburg State drilled back-to-back three pointers from sophomore Kayla Wilson and Diggs to make the game 19-7. Yoder finished the half with 11 points with five free throws. The Bobcats took the lead into the half 28-13 by out rebounding the Eagles 27-16.
The Eagles started the second half on an 8-2 run to make the score 30-21 FSU. Juniata dwindled the Bobcat lead to eight before two free throws from first-year forward Drew Dunathan and a layup by Wilson extended the lead back to double digits 40-28 Bobcats late in the third quarter.
After drilling back-to-back-to-back three's the Eagles cut the FSU lead to five 46-41. Frostburg State took a quick timeout and responded with a layup by junior forward Sydney Stotler assisted by Diggs. Followed by a lay-in by Diggs off of the Eagle turnover.
In the final minute Juniata pulled within one point after an and-one layup by Madison Colyer. FSU responded with two free throws from Diggs to make it a 55-52 score. On the following possession senior guard Jasmine Tirado-Viscalla stole an Eagle pass to end the Juniata threat.
Diggs finished the game with a season high 25 points. Junior forward Amanda Emory had seven points with 10 rebounds.
FSU returns to action on Monday, December 3rd at home where they will take on Wilson College at 6:00 p.m.
