PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Junior Daniel Alexander scored 26 points and senior Edwin Cole added 20 as the Frostburg men's basketball team dropped the consolation game of the 2018 CMU Double Tree Invitational to Transylvania, 82-71, Sunday afternoon.
Alexander knocked down nine baskets and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the foul line, while Cole connected on four shots and hit 12 free throws. Together the duo was joined by first-year Torrin Stephens as they all pulled down eight rebounds.
The Bobcats (2-3) struggled in the first half of action and couldn't overcome a 45-26 deficit at intermission. FSU made just five baskets in the opening 20 minutes and the Pioneers (2-3) led as many as 13 points before the midway point of the opening period. Transylvania (2-3) hit a three-pointer at 7:04 for its largest lead of the opening half, 21, at 39-18.
The Pioneers opened the second half by grabbing a 26-point cushion on two occasions before Frostburg started to narrow the gap.
FSU scored 25 points over the final 9:14 of the second to pull to within 10 points with 33 seconds showing on the clock.
Alexander, who earned all-tournament honors, started the outburst with a jumper off an assist from Stephens and Alexander connected on four-consecutive foul shots over the next few moments.
First-year Bo Schene hit a three-pointer at 7:35 and Cole converted a traditional three-point play with a layup and foul shot at 4:47. Cole grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back at 1:30 as FSU trailed 79-69. With 33 seconds left, junior Terry Kenner hit a jumper as Frostburg trailed by 10 again, this time 81-71.
Transylvania had three players finish in double figures and was led in scoring by Devin Twenty with 14 points.
Frostburg returns to action next Saturday at Bridgewater at 2:00 pm.
