Bobcats Fall To Carnegie Mellon Invitational Hosts

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team traveled to Carnegie Mellon to participate in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational and was defeated by its host Tartans, 87-73 on Saturday afternoon.

Carnegie Mellon took an 8-6 lead after a tip-in from junior forward Trent Suddeth, and they held onto it for the remainder of the game.
 
With the Bobcats trailing, 15-8, junior guard Lawrence Pettis, Jr. and junior guard Daniel Alexander both put in successful layups to cut the deficit to three points. The Tartans then broke away, scoring 10 unanswered points, four of which came from guard Zach Watson.
 
The first half ended with the Tartans leading, 45-30. Suddeth led the way for Carnegie Mellon with 17 points while Seth Henry had nine points and six rebounds at the break. Alexander had 10 points and three rebounds at the half for the Bobcats.
 
FSU senior Edwin Cole came out of the halftime locker room to score eight points in the first eight minutes of play to cut the deficit to eight points with a score of 57-49. The Tartans then went on a 10-3 run to take another 15-point lead.
 
With the score 74-55 in favor of Carnegie Mellon, the Bobcats went on a run of their own, scoring eight unanswered points and 10 of 11 points, including two jumpers from Alexander to cut the deficit to 10. That's the closest the Bobcats would get to the Tartans, as the hosts go on to win, 87-73.
 
Frostburg outscored Carnegie Mellon in the paint, 40-34, but the Tartans held a 27-22 points off the bench advantage as well as a 15-8 advantage in fast break points.
 
Alexander led the Bobcats in both scoring and rebounds with 18 and seven respectively. Cole finished the game with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Suddeth led the game with 20 points for the Tartans, while his teammates Seth Henry and Ethan Miller both collected double-doubles. Henry finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Miller had 10 points and rebounds each.
 
The Bobcats (2-2) will play Transylvania in the invitational consolation game, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
