Men’s Basketball Rolls In Home Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg men's basketball team led from the opening tip to the final horn in a 91-78 win over Penn State Altoona in the home opener for the Bobcats, Saturday night.
 
Junior guard Lawrence Pettis led the Bobcats (2-0) with 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting with six three-pointers and four assists.
 
Junior guard Jordan Dawson and first-year guard Nicholas Johnson each finished with 10 points as 11 different players scored Frostburg in the win.
 
As a team, FSU shot 47.8 percent from the floor and connected on 10-of-27 three-pointers. Frostburg also held a sizeable advantage in rebounding, 49-33, and it finished the night with five blocks.
 
In the opening half, junior Daniel Alexander made the game's first basket just 15 seconds into action and Frostburg never trailed.
 
FSU's lead climbed to double digits just over six minutes in when Dawson hit a layup for a 17-7 cushion. The Lions (0-2) pulled to within four, 21-17 with 8:11 showing on the clock, but Frostburg surged behind a 13-1 run for a 34-18 lead. Pettis opened the scoring spurt with a three-pointer and Johnson hit a jumper at 4:56 to close the effort.
 
Penn State Altoona's Malcolm Martin his a layup with 28 seconds left in the first half to pull the deficit to single digits at 48-39 at intermission.
 
The Lion continued that momentum into the second half as they clawed to within a point, 55-54 at 15:13.
 
However, that is as close as they would get as Frostburg slowly started to pull away until the final horn. Junior Terry Kenner hit a three-pointer that pushed Frostburg's lead back to 10, 68-58 with just 10 minutes to play in the second stanza.
 
Pettis hit a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining as Frostburg led by a game-high 18, 90-72.
 
Jalen Archie-Davis led the Lions with 15 points, while Cameron Gardner-Nicholson was second with 13.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday at Marietta at 7:00 pm.
