FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team scored three first-half goals on their way to a 4-0 victory over Hood College on Tuesday evening.
The Bobcats' scoring started early, when sophomore Sam Coffey rattled the back of the cage in the game's fourth minute of action. Two minutes later, senior Holly Van Wie scored the second goal for the Bobcats, taking a pass from Coffey and depositing it into the goal.
Coffey added a second goal to her ledger, as she beat Blazer goalie Nicole Bennett for the second time in the match to give the Bobcats an early 3-0 lead. The goal was assisted by senior defender Cara Morell.
Frostburg would take their three-goal lead into halftime, outshooting Hood 21-1 in the first 35 minutes, and having a 12-0 penalty corner advantage.
The second half was more of the same from the Bobcat offense, as they peppered Bennett with 17 shots, forcing her to save 11.
FSU added another goal in the 61
st minute of action, as Morrell put a successful shot into the cage off of a pass from fellow classmate Sam Schaffer to give the Bobcats the 4-0 lead that they would hold until the final whistle.
Frostburg had a total of 38 shots, forcing Bennett to make 24 saves for the Blazers.
FSU was led by Coffey, who had two goals on five shots and an assist. Coffey now leads the team with six goals on the season and 14 points. Sophomore forward Gabby Rachuba had a game-high nine shots, eight of which were on goal.
Frostburg's (2-10, 0-1) next game will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 as the team travels to conference opponent Mary Washington.
