Frostburg Falls To Ranked Conference Opponent

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Bobcats couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit at halftime against CAC opponent #21 Christopher Newport, losing 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute as senior midfielder Gabby Gillis took a pass from forward Riley Cook and deposited it into the back of the Bobcat goal for the match's first tally.

Three minutes later, in the 28th minute of action, CNU struck again, this time Cook was the one awarded the goal, as she beat first-year goalkeeper Stephanie Vigezzi with a shot to give the Captains a 2-0 lead, which they held going into the halftime locker rooms.

The Bobcats attempted five shots, three on goal in the first 45 minutes, while the Captains attempted 15 shots of their own.

The second half started off with quick offensive opportunities from both teams, as Vigezzi saved a shot off the foot of CNU's Carson Pokorny in the 47th minute. Two minutes later, in the 49th minute of play, Bobcat sophomore Emily Lehman forced Christopher Newport goalkeeper Maddy Belanger to save her shot.

FSU got on the board in the 76th minute of action, when sophomore defender Danielle McLain took a shot from 30-yards out that found its way into the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-1.

McLain's goal was just about the last hint of offense the Bobcats would see, as they were held to just one shot in the game's final 24 minutes.

Lehman led the FSU offense with two shots on goal, while Vigezzi collected nine saves in the effort.

The Bobcats (3-8, 1-1) will next take the field on Wednesday, October 10 on the road against another CAC opponent, Mary Washington.
