Geatz Header Carries Frostburg Past CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg junior Blake Geatz headed home the game-winning goal for Frostburg, Saturday night in a slim 1-0 win over Christopher Newport.

Geatz' timely tally snapped a four-game winless streak for the Bobcats and improved their record to 4-7-1 and 1-1 in the league.

Frostburg was awarded a corner kick at 88:14 that was taken by sophomore Randy Putnam. Thirty seconds later, senior Willie Jefferson flipped a high cross towards the far post of the net that Geatz headed into the corner for the game winner.

The loss drops CNU to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the league despite outshooting Frostburg 19-7.

Bobcat first-year goalkeeper Joe Assal registered five saves in the win and kept the Captains off the board. He opened the second half with a save at 52:07 and again at 54:29 as the Captains opened the frame with a flurry of action as it attempted six shots inside the first 15 minutes of action.

In the 86th minute Assal made another save on a shot from Stephen Durbin who was charging on net and knocked a cross towards Assal from just outside the 18.

Just over two minutes later, Frostburg scored the game-winner.

Midway through the second half, Frostburg nearly scored the game winner when sophomore Mo Odolla beat his defender on a long ball and then moved his way around Captain keeper Zach Pedini.

Odolla's first shot hit the post and he collected the rebound and scored. However, the goal was waived off as the referee whistled Odolla for foul against a Captain defender.

In the first half, the Bobcats had a couple of headers from just outside the seven-yard box turned away by Pedini. Frostburg's first chance came in the 13th minute as junior Blake Geatz tried a header from the left side of the net off a corner kick. In the 28th minute, senior Brett Basham attempted another header that was saved by Pedini.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Washington at 6:00 pm.
