WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg women's soccer team was hit with a 2-0 loss on the road against Catholic on Wednesday night.
Catholic sophomore Krista Boretti scored the match's first tally as she beat Bobcat first-year goalkeeper Stephanie Vigezzi to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play.
Frostburg tried to respond quickly, as junior Brooke Shehade took a shot 17 seconds after the Cardinal score, but it was saved by Nina Fernandez in the Catholic goal.
Vigezzi would save eight shots in the first half to halt the Cardinal attack and keep the deficit at one goal heading into halftime.
FSU's offense managed to shoot three shots on goal in the second half, two off the foot of sophomore forward Emily Lehman, but Fernandez managed to save each one.
The Cardinal offense continued to challenge Vigezzi, as they had 12 shots in the second 45 minutes of play. The 12
th shot of the half was the one that got passed the Frostburg goalie to give Catholic a 2-0 lead in the 81
st minute. Sophomore Halle Green connected on the successful shot, as the assist was awarded to sophomore Maggie Moorcones.
Catholic outshot Frostburg, 32-6 and also held a 15-6 advantage on shots on goal. Vigezzi collected 13 saves in her first career collegiate game.
The Bobcats (3-7, 1-0 CAC) will return home for their next game after their previous four matches came on the road. FSU will host conference opponent #21 Christopher Newport at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
