FROSTBURG, Md. – After losing the first set, the Frostburg State volleyball team won the next three and took down Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18) on Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
It was looking like the Bobcats were on their way to the early 1-0 set lead, as they held a 19-14 advantage over Penn State-Harrisburg. The Lions roared back however, as they rattled off five of the next six points to cut their deficit to just one tally. With the Bobcats one point away from taking the opening set, leading 24-21, the Lions scored five consecutive points thanks in part to two kills from junior Brittany Wolf to take the set, 26-24.
With the second set tied 4-4, the Bobcats went on a 5-1 run to separate themselves from the Lions and they never relinquished the lead. Later on in the set, FSU scored eight out of nine points, including a 6-0 run that included a kill and an ace from junior Biamba Tshitenge, which gave the Bobcats a 10-point lead, with the score being 20-10.
Penn State-Harrisburg would cut its deficit to five points with a 5-0 run, but Frostburg finished off the set, winning 25-18 and evening the score at one set apiece.
The third set was close early on, as Frostburg held a slight 12-11 lead, but the Bobcats pulled ahead, going on a 6-1 run that featured an ace from first-year Haley Altemus and four errors from the Lions' side. The Bobcats kept the lead until the end of the set, when they claimed a 25-19 victory and took a 2-1 set lead.
After giving up the first point of the fourth set, Frostburg scored four straight points that featured a kill from Altemus and a kill from junior Katie Onyundo, to jump out to an early 4-1 lead. The Lions would fight back to take a 12-11 lead, but that would be the last time they would find themselves ahead. FSU jumped back ahead to a 15-13 lead thanks to a 4-1 run.
The Bobcats closed out the set by scoring seven out of the last eight points, giving them the 25-18 set victory.
Frostburg was led by Altemus, who collected 13 kills and 19 digs, and Onyundo, who had 20 digs and dished out 32 assists.
Wolf led the match with 16 kills while senior libero Kari Ammerman dug out a match-high 35 shots for the Lions in the effort.
Frostburg (10-20, 2-4) will host their second Frostburg Quad match of the season this upcoming weekend, as they kick off the festivities against conference rival Salisbury at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
