Assal Saves Career-High In Scoreless Draw

FROSTBURG, Md. – First-year goalkeeper Joel Assal saved a career-high 13 shots as the Frostburg State men's soccer game ended in a 0-0 draw with Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent St. Mary's (Md.) at home on Saturday night.

Neither team was able to get much offense going early, as the first attempted shot was made in the 22nd minute off of the foot of Seahawks senior Juwan Kearson, which went wide. Frostburg's first and only shot of the half came three minutes later, as sophomore Randy Putnam put a shot on goal forcing St. Mary's goalie Patrick Paolini to make a save.

Assal was forced to save three shots in the half, two from forward Roshawn Panton, to keep the game in a scoreless tie going into halftime. St. Mary's outshot the Bobcats 6-1 in the game's first 45 minutes of action.

St. Mary's offense continued to pepper Assal in the second half, as the Seahawks' first three shots came within five minutes of each other, all of which Assal turned away. In the game's 61st minute, SMC sophomore Isaac Ekobo had a chance to put the game's first tally on the board, but his shot rang off the post.

Assal saved a header attempt from Seahawks Andrew Kalinoski in the 78th minute, then turned another shot away 30 seconds later.

Things got heated on the field, as both teams were given a red card with six minutes remaining in the game. Kearson was sent back the Seahawks bench while the Bobcats were without sophomore Derek Staines for the remainder of the game. Forty-six seconds later, Frostburg's first-year defender Cameron Coates was shown his second yellow card of the match.

The score remained deadlocked at 0-0 for the final five minutes of the second half. Overall, Assal stopped 10 shots as St. Mary's held a 16-3 shot advantage during regulation.

Seahawks junior Brad Moore opened up the overtime period with a shot on goal that was saved by Assal, 24 seconds into play.

With just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, SMC junior Khalid Balogun took a shot off of a free kick from just outside the box that was saved by a jumping Assal, keeping the game scoreless going into the second overtime period.

The only scoring opportunity that came in the second overtime period was a shot from the foot of SMC defender Jacob Breslauer, which was saved by Assal, his career-mark of 13. After 110 minutes of action, the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

St. Mary's finished with 20 shots, 13 of which were on target, while the Bobcats offense had four total shots with one being on goal. The Seahawks also had the corner kick advantage, as they had 12 corner kicks to Frostburg's one.

The Bobcats now sit at 4-8-2 and 1-2-1 in conference play, while St. Mary's finds itself at 9-2-3 and 2-1-1 in conference games.

FSU will play their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, October 17th at 6:00 p.m., as Southern Virginia will make its way to Bobcat Stadium.
