FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team defeated York (Pa.) to win its first conference match of the year and followed that up with a victory over Pitt-Bradford while playing host in the Frostburg Tri-Match on Saturday.
FIRST MATCH
The Bobcats kicked off the tri-match against York, beating the Spartans 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-21). FSU came out of the gate running, as they scored five of the match's first six points and held the lead for the set's entirety after briefly being tied, 1-1. The Spartans made the set close after rattling off five-straight points to cut their deficit to just one tally at 14-13.
The Bobcats would pull back ahead, thanks to a 4-0 run that featured two kills from junior Ashante Corey-Bey to take a 23-16 advantage. York wouldn't go down without a fight however, as the Spartans scored five unanswered points cutting the Frostburg lead to 24-22. After a timeout from the Bobcats, first-year Haley Altemus nailed down the set with a kill to give FSU a 1-0 set advantage.
York pulled ahead to take an early 5-2 lead in the second set, thanks in part to two kills from senior Eryn Brady. The Spartans held an 18-14 advantage over the Bobcats later in the set, but FSU scored six out of the set's next seven points to jump ahead to a 20-19 lead. The two teams went back and forth to a 22-22 tie, but the Bobcats would prevail, riding a 3-0 run to end the set at 25-22.
York again raced out to an early lead in the third set, as they 9-5. The Bobcats came back again, scoring six of the next eight points, including three kills from Altemus to tie the game, 11-11. York scored the next two points, but FSU followed that with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. The Spartans threatened to come back, scoring five of six points to cut the Bobcat lead to three, but Frostburg finished the set off, 25-21 to win the match in straight sets.
Altemus led the collected 14 digs and led the team with 10 kills, while junior Biamba Tshitenge had nine kills and four blocks. Spartans senior Brooke Krebs led the game with 13 kills.
