Women’s Basketball Claims Victory Over Salisbury

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team rolled past Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Salisbury 62-49 behind three Bobcats in double figures, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in CAC play, while Salisbury drops to 6-7 and 1-5 in the league.

Frostburg State's bench had a strong showing outscoring Salisbury's 29-17. The Bobcats also outscored the Sea Gulls 30-22 in the paint, while shooting 39.7 percent from the floor on 23-58 from the field.

Frostburg forced Salisbury into 18 turnovers on the day, while the Sea Gulls only forced 13 against the Bobcats.

Sophomore Victoria Diggs led the Bobcats in scoring netting her 10th game in double figures with  12 points and dishing out two assists, while sophomore Amanda Emory recorded her first double-double of the year posting 11 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and tallying four steals. The other Bobcat in double figures was junior Amber Downey who added 10 points with two rebounds.

Salisbury was led by Kaylyn French behind a double-double effort with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Frostburg State took an early 7-4 lead with 7:11 left in the first quarter as Victoria Diggs knocked down a three-point field goal, however the Sea Gulls kept it close as French hit a layup with 2:28 left in the first quarter cutting the Bobcat lead to 13-12. Downey knocked down a jumper with 1:41 giving Frostburg a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, junior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla netted a three-pointer with 8:59 left in the half giving the Bobcats a 20-12 lead. Frostburg opened its largest lead of the first half (32-21) at 2:25 in the second quarter as first-year Kayla Wilson hit a layup. The Bobcats headed into the intermission with a nine point lead, 32-23.

Late in the third quarter with 51 seconds left Emory netted a layup pushing the Bobcats lead back to nine at the end of the third, 45-36.

Frostburg State opened up the fourth quarter on a 10-4 run pushing its lead to 55-40 after sophomore Sydney Stotler knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:07 left in the contest. The last point of the afternoon came from a Diggs free throw with 34 seconds left in the game sealing the Bobcats 62-49 victory.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday as they travel to Mary Washington to continue CAC play. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
