FROSTBURG, Md. – A balanced scoring effort throughout the lineup and a strong first half performance helped propel the Frostburg State men's basketball team to a hard-fought 67-60 win over Marymount (Va.) in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (5-7, 3-2) shot 18-of-39 (46.2%) from the field in the first half and 29-of-69 (42%) for the contest in its first home game since December 9.
Marymount (3-9, 2-3) finished 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the floor and knocked down five three-pointers.
The Bobcats stifling defense posted a season-high 11 steals, something the team has done on four separate occasions this season, while committing just 11 turnovers. Meanwhile, Marymount had 18 turnovers with 13 coming in the first half.
Frostburg also held the edge in points off turnovers (11-9), bench points (11-9) and points in the paint (42-34).
Sophomore Daniel Alexander netted a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He added nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in 33 minutes.
Alexander has emerged as one of the primary offensive threats for the Bobcats with his fourth-straight double-digit scoring game. The Rockville, Md. native currently ranks 10
th in the conference in scoring at 14.4 points/game.
Frostburg also received double-digit scoring contributions from senior Tyler Michael and junior Edwin Cole, who poured in 14 points each. Michael, who ranks fourth in the conference in scoring, added seven assists in 32 minutes. Cole also snared nine rebounds with three assists and two steals.
Sophomore Lawrence Pettis, Jr. led the Bobcats in second half scoring with all nine of his points coming after the intermission.
An Alexander layup at 17:31 put the Bobcats in front and gave the team a lead it would not relinquish until the 6:06 mark in the first half. The Bobcats regained the first half lead (22-21) on a layup from junior Desmond Lighty, who played seven minutes off the bench.
Senior guard Jordan Johnson scored the final points of the first half at 1:47 to give the hosts a 37-30 lead heading into the locker room.
Both teams scored 30 points in the second half and the Bobcats never trailed. Michael handed Frostburg its largest lead of the night (43-32) with a layup at 16:19. Marymount would cut the Frostburg lead to single digits but the Bobcats converted some key free throws down the stretch to seal the 67-60 triumph.
Dimitri Rucker led the Saints with 19 points while Taiga Walker had 14.
Frostburg returns to action this Saturday when it faces in-state rival Salisbury at Bobcat Arena. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Bobcat Sports Network.
