ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team cruised to a 68-51 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play.
Frostburg (9-10, 5-7 CAC) opened up with a 16-10 first quarter, holding St. Mary's (6-12, 2-10 CAC) to just 20% from the floor in the opening half. The Seahawks scored only 20 points in the first half, making just 3-of-9 three-pointers in the process.
Meanwhile, Frostburg received key contributions from two first-year players who have played an increased role of late. First-year guard Kayla Wilson steered the Bobcats offensively with a game-high 18 points while first-year forward Marina Jones chipped in 10.
The 18 points tied a career-high scoring output for Wilson, who went 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in 28 minutes of action. The Laurel, Md. native has scored in double figures in three-straight games while playing 20+ minutes in each of the past three contests.
Jones notched the first double-digit scoring game of her career after going 4-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. She also snared five rebounds in 28 minutes.
Sophomores Victoria Yoder, Amanda Emory and Victoria Diggs all poured in eight points each in the Bobcats' balanced scoring onslaught.
Sophomore forward Sydney Stotler stepped out and drilled a three-pointer at 6:54 in the second quarter for a 21-12 lead. Jones converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:52 left in the opening half to put Frostburg up 12 (26-14) and Wilson extended the lead to 14 on the ensuing trip up the floor.
Diggs handed Frostburg its largest lead of the night with a three-pointer at the 2:25 mark in the third quarter. The Bobcats shot 46.3% from the floor as a team and went 14-of-27 (51.9%) in the second half.
Frostburg, who completed the regular season sweep of the Seahawks with the win, did not trail by less than 17 points in the final quarter.
The Bobcats return to the court on Wednesday, January 31 at Penn State Harrisburg for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
