FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team had three players in double figures, but was unable to claim the win over Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Southern Virginia as they fell 79-59 Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
With the loss Frostburg State drops to 8-8 on the year and 4-5 in conference play, while Southern Virginia improves to 9-6 overall and 3-6 in the CAC.
The Bobcats struggled on the offensive end, only able to shoot 24.6 percent from the floor on 17-69 shooting. Frostburg shot just 12.1 percent, in the first half only scoring four field goal attempts.
Southern Virginia shot 47 percent from the field at 31-66, while netting 56.25 (18-32) percent from the floor in the second half.
The Bobcats were outscored by the Knights 36-18 with points in the paint and points off the bench as Southern Virginia mustered 24 to Frostburg's 14.
The Bobcats were led by sophomore Victoria Diggs as she filled the stat line pouring in 19 points, grabbing seven rebounds, with four assists and three steals. Diggs has managed to score double-digits in 13 of the 16 games on the season.
The other Bobcats in double figures were sophomore Sydney Stotler who scored 13 points on 5-6 from the foul line, while sophomore Victoria Yoder netted 12 points
Stotler grabbed seven boards and totaled four steals, while Yoder pulled down seven rebounds.
In the first quarter, the game was back-and-fourth but Frostburg State managed to take the lead at the end of the frame as Diggs knocked down a three-pointer with 19 seconds left giving the Bobcats a 15-13 lead.
Frostburg State found itself behind in the second quarter as the Bobcats were only able to generate four points in the quarter on a Diggs layup at 2:44 and two Stotler free throws with three seconds left in the half. Southern Virginia outscored Frostburg State 19-4 in the second quarter as the Bobcats trailed 32-19 at intermission.
In the third quarter FSU battled and cut the deficit to 10 (32-22) at 8:21 behind sophomore Amanda Emory's made jumper, but quickly fell behind and found itself down 57-36 at the end of the third quarter.
Southern Virginia's Bryndie Ballam knocked down a three at 8:41 in the fourth quarter giving the Knights a 60-38 lead. The Bobcats then made a 23-4 run, cutting the lead to nine (64-55) with five minutes remaining in the contest after a Stotler made layup. The Bobcats were unable to complete the comeback as they dropped the contest 79-59.
Southern Virginia was led by Katie Garrish, who posted a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Frostburg State returns to action this Saturday as it hosts No. 10 Christopher Newport at 1:00 p.m. in Bobcat Arena.
