WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore middle hitter Ashante Corey-Bey smacked 13 kills as the Frostburg volleyball team fell 3-2 in non-conference road action Wednesday night.
Frostburg (9-5) and Catholic (9-6) played a back-and-forth contest as the teams traded sets throughout the evening. Ultimately, the Cardinals took the match-deciding fifth set 15-10 to seal the victory.
In addition to Corey-Bey's 13 kills, senior Naya Cheatem had 12 and sophomore Biamba Tshitenge had 11. Senior Madelyn Torres paced the Bobcats in assists (30) and Tshitenge had a match-high nine blocks.
Frostburg held the edge statistically in the first set, hitting .308 as a team on 26 attacks, but surrendered the last four points in a 26-24 loss.
The Bobcats rolled to a 25-15 win in the second set to tie the match at one. The Bobcats used a pair of kills from Tshitenge, a kill from seniors Zoe Harris and Karli Grimes and two Catholic attack errors to open up a 12-6 lead. Frostburg also closed the second set strong, outscoring the Cardinals 6-1.
After the Cardinals took the third set 25-17, Frostburg tied the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. Trailing 13-10, Frostburg scored six-straight points to take a 16-13 lead. Torres had three asissts in the Bobcat scoring run, setting up Cheatem, Harris and Tshitenge for kills.
With the final set tied at four, Catholic scored five-straight points for a 9-5 lead. The Cardinals posted the final three points of the night for the 15-10 win.
Frostburg opens up Lebanon Valley Tournament play this Friday against Neumann at 7:00 p.m.
