WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior defensive specialist Lindsey Scepura totaled 25 digs in seven sets, setting a new Frostburg school record with 1,593 career digs as the volleyball team split a pair of matches against Franciscan and Wooster on day one of the 2017 Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic.
Scepura, an Ellicott City, Md. native, surpassed Sam Seyfferth's 1,585 career digs in the Bobcats' second match of the evening against Wooster. Seyfferth played with the Bobcats from 2001-04.
Frostburg enters the second day of the 2017 Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic with an 8-3 overall record.
Match One: Franciscan
Frostburg won its fifth-straight match with a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-16) victory. The Bobcats were rolling on all cylinders, holding the edge in nearly every statistical categories and limited the Barons to a -.093 hitting percentage.
Senior Karli Grimes paced the Bobcats with eight kills while sophomore Katie Onyundo posted 27 assists. Onyundo was also second on the team in aces (2) and digs (10) for the match.
Sophomore Cori Smothers had three aces and sophomore Kathryn Lough had 15 digs.
As a team, the Bobcats smacked 37 kills, finished with eight aces and dished out 33 assists.
Frostburg opened up a 4-0 lead in the first set before jumping up 18-5. In the second set, Frostburg rolled to a 20-5 edge before finishing things with four-straight points. The Bobcats continued their momentum in the third set, opening up a 16-5 edge before ultimately completing the sweep with a 25-16 win.
Match Two: Wooster
Frostburg took the first set in the nightcap, but finished the evening losing three-straight sets to tournament host Wooster (25-14, 17-25, 18-25, 19-25).
Scepura finished the match with 18 digs upon entering just 11 digs shy of breaking the school record.
Senior Naya Cheatem totaled 16.0 points, finishing with 15 kills and on 36 total attacks. Sophomore middle hitter Ashante Cory-Bey hit an impressive .429 with seven kills.
Frostburg grabbed a 10-4 lead in the first set, highlighted by a pair of kills from sophomore Biamba Tshitenge.
