LATROBE, Pa. – Senior Nya Cheatem totaled 22 kills on the day while senior Madelyn Torres dished out 31 total assists as the Frostburg State volleyball team opened its 2017 campaign with a split against St. Vincent and Pitt-Greensburg Friday in the St. Vincent Tournament.
The Bobcats dropped a thrilling five set match, 3-2 (25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 18-25, 12-15), as St. Vincent rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim the win. Cheatem provided plenty of offense for the Bobcats with 12 kills, while classmate Lindsey Scepura had 18 digs.
The Bobcats rolled through the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-14 before the Bearcats closed the gap and earned the narrow 3-2 victory. Frostburg went up 10-4 in the second set and extended its lead to 21-10, forcing the Bearcats to hit -.135 for the match with 15 errors.
It was all Frostburg in the nightcap, as they cruised to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) victory over Pitt-Greensburg. Setting up the offense in the second match was sophomore Katie Onyundo who tallied 18 assists. Torres' tallied seven service aces in addition to 14 assists in match two.
Frostburg (1-1) held the edge in nearly every statistical category and limited Pitt-Greensburg to 20 kills.
The Bobcats were tied at eight in the second set with Pitt-Greensburg and used a 9-1 run to go up 17-9. A pair of kills by Cheatem put the Bobcats up 18-14, who scored seven of the final eight points in the set.
Individually, sophomore Biamba Tshitenge had seven kills and sophomore Ashante Corey-Bey had six.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon, concluding the St. Vincent Tournament against Westminster at noon and La Roche at 4:00 p.m.
