Bobcats Win Pair In Home Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State waited almost a month-and-a-half since the beginning of its 2017 game schedule to host its first opponent and the Bobcats wasted little time in dispatching Southern Virginia in a CAC doubleheader, Wednesday.

Frostburg pushed its overall record to 16-10 and sits at 7-1 in the league after defeating the Knights (9-19, 0-8), 7-2, in game one and, 15-2, in five innings in the second game.

Bobcat starter Allison Short struckout five in the first game and allowed just one earned run in 6.0 innings. Sophomore Ali Caulkins tossed the final frame and allowed just one earned run.

Seniors Hannah Tavik and Selina Matulonis along with junior Brittney Platt each drove in two runs. Tavik was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, Matulonis was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Platt finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Senior Jessica Dubbs was 3-for-4 with two runs.

Platt doubled home Dubbs in the top of the first for the first run before Matulonis tripled home both Platt and Tavik for a quick 3-0 lead.

Frostburg struck again in the second when senior Sam Gatton scored on an error before Platt closed the inning with a single that scored Dubbs for a 5-0 cushion.

In the fourth, Tavik smacked a two-run home run to centerfield that scored Gatton for a 7-0 advantage.

Short struck out at least one Knight batter in the first four innings before surrendering a run in the top of the fifth. Rachael Moore plated Katierose Helems with a fielder's choice. SVU tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh.

In the nightcap, FSU scored at least three runs in all four innings in which it batted.

Platt homered in the second that scored senior Emily Harvey to highlight a three-run opening frame. Frostburg then tacked on five runs in the second to blow the contest open.

Dubbs singled home senior Emily Zengel for the first run of the second, before both Harvey and Platt drew bases loaded walks. Tavik also scored on a passed ball, while Harvey scored on an error.

The Bobcats led 8-0 after two innings and added three more in the third when Hanlon doubled home senior Megan Tracey and Harvey singled home both freshman Claire Hanlon and Dubbs.

The Bobcats closed out the afternoon with a four-run fourth inning. Matulonis accented the final frame with a two-run double.

Tavik tossed 4.0 innings and earned her sixth win of the season. She allowed just two runs, one earned while fanning two. Caulkins again pitched the final inning and didn't surrender a run.

Harvey finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Dubbs was 2-for-2 with four runs and an RBI. Platt drove in three runs behind her home run and walk.
