MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Frostburg State softball team collected its fourth sweep in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play this season with two victories over Penn State Harrisburg Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg, winners of four in a row, improves its record to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Penn State Harrisburg falls to 10-12 overall and 2-8 in CAC play.
The sweep helped the Bobcats move into first place in the CAC.
Game One
Frostburg jumped on the Lions early with two runs in the first inning, part of a 6-1 victory for the Bobcats.
Junior Allison Short (10-4) won her third-straight outing as she remains undefeated in conference play. She tossed 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run with four strikeouts. It is also the fourth game of the year where she has not allowed an earned run.
Senior Sam Gatton paced the Bobcats offensively with three RBI in game one. Seven Bobcats registered at least one hit, while seniors Jessica Dubbs and Emily Zengel recorded multi-hit games.
After the Bobcats scored two runs in the first, Gatton opened the game up in the fourth inning by smacking a three-run home run, giving the Bobcats a 5-0 advantage.
The Lions answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the Bobcat lead to 5-1. In the fifth, Tracey drew a walk while senior Selina Matulonis scored on a wild pitch, putting the Bobcats up 6-1.
Game Two
Frostburg scored solo runs in the third and fifth innings and tacked on three more in the seventh for the 5-0 shutout.
It was the eighth shutout of the year for the Bobcats, with the last one coming on April 1 against Wesley.
Tavik, who finished the second game 3-for-4, singled home senior Sam Gatton in the third for a 1-0 cushion and doubled home Gatton in the fifth as Frostburg led 2-0.
Gatton scored again in the top of the seventh when senior Jessica Dubbs singled to right. Tavik homered for the second time this season for a 4-0 advantage and junior Brittney Platt hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored senior Emily Harvey for the final run.
In the circle, Tavik tossed all 7.0 innings and struckout seven, while scattering three hits. She allowed Harrisburg just solo hits in the third, sixth and seventh innings. The shutout was her fourth of the season and the win marks her second conference victory of the week.
