Baseball Loses Pair To Rival Salisbury

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team dropped a pair of home games to in-state rival Salisbury on Sunday, as the Bobcats lost game one, 6-1, and game two, 9-7.
 
Frostburg (12-12, 4-7) struck first in the opener with a single run in the second inning. Junior Logan Corrigan singled up the middle to lead off the frame and he advanced to second on a senior Brad Garrant single to third.
 
Two batters later, Corrigan gave the Bobcats the 1-0 cushion when he crossed home plate on a fielder's choice when junior Matt Jeffrey grounded to second base.
 
Salisbury answered in the third when Tom Labriola doubled home two runs for a 2-1 lead. Labriola struck again with an RBI double in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.
 
The Sea Gulls added a single run in the seventh and two more in the ninth for the 6-1 final.
 
Junior Greg Schneider suffered the loss after tossing 6.0 innings and striking out nine. He allowed just nine hits and four earned runs.
 
Garrant finished the opener with two hits, while Jeffrey posted the team's only RBI.
 
In the nightcap, the Sea Gulls survived a late rally from Frostburg for the 9-7 win.
 
SU scored first with a two-run home run in the first before FSU scored once in the home half of the first when junior Kyle Burger led off with a single up the middle. He scored when Jeffery was walked with the bases loaded later in the inning.
 
The Bobcats tied the game at two runs each in the second when Burger singled home senior Cody Harman, who kick started the inning with a single through the right side.
 
Salisbury jumped out to a 4-2 advantage in the third with two runs. Colby Dean tripled home a run and scored on a wild pitch.
 
FSU narrowed its deficit with a single run in the fifth when Garrant doubled down the right field line that plated Corrigan for a 4-3 score.
 
The visitors opened up their lead following a five-run sixth. Frostburg chipped away at the deficit over the next two innings with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
 
Burger smacked a deep home run to right field in the sixth that cut the score to 9-4 before the three-run seventh. Garrant homered to left field to open the seventh, before junior Colton Sivic doubled home junior Patrick Bosley for the frame's second run. Junior Evan Colon singled home the final run and plated Sivic for a 9-7 score.
 
Frostburg was held to just one hit over the final two innings and wasn't able to further cut into the lead.
 
Junior Dan Ryczek took the loss after allowing four earned run in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Junior Trenton Eirich, senior Ryan Callahan, junior Mike Takovich, senior Connor Gorman, sophomore Christian Rivera and sophomore Blake Clift all saw time on the mound in the loss.
 
Callahan finished with two strikeouts, while Rivera pitched two innings and allowed just one hit.
 
Burger finished the second contest 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, while Garrant was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sivic and Colon each posted two hits.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts York (Pa.) at 3:45 pm.
