FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg men's lacrosse team dropped a road contest at Mary Washington, 11-9, in the first round of the CAC Tournament, Wednesday afternoon.
The loss caps the season for FSU with a 9-7 overall record in its fifth-straight CAC Tournament appearance.
Mary Washington (9-7) jumped out to a 10-4 lead at halftime and the Bobcats used a fourth-quarter surge to narrow the deficit at the final horn.
Each team opened the game with two goals apiece and the Eagles scored the game's first two for a 2-0 lead. Junior Adam Gross answered for the Bobcats with goals at 9:18 and 7:00 to tie the contest.
Mary Washington then scored four-straight goals that carried into the second quarter as it led 6-2.
Gross' third goal of the afternoon came at 12:52 in the second that halted the Eagle run and made the score 6-3.
The hosts, however, collected another 4-0 run that pushed their lead to 10-3 with less than two minutes remaining on the first-half clock.
Junior Nick Pontorno scored with one second left in the second quarter to pull Frostburg's halftime deficit to 10-4.
In the third, Mary Washington's Owen Dingman scored just over three minutes into play before freshman Jimmy Lucas scored with just over two minutes left to send the game into the fourth at 11-5.
The Bobcats seized the contest's momentum in the fourth and final stanza with all four goals during the frame. Gross scored for the fourth time in the game to open the fourth at 12:40 before Pontorno scored again at 9:22 as Frostburg trailed just 11-7.
Junior Keegan Colegrove handed out assists on the final two goals in the waning minutes of the contest. Colegrove found Ruppert with 1:23 and then connected with Lucas for the final score with 13 seconds left.
Frostburg freshman Jack Marks notched all 13 of his saves over the first three quarters before FSU's offensive surge in the fourth. Gross led the attack with four goals, while Pontorno scored twice. Colegrove handed out a season-high three assists.
Shane McKenzie, Mike Marson and Robert Tata each scored two goals to lead the Eagles. UMW advances in the tournament and will travel to No. 1 ranked Salisbury on Saturday.
