Baseball Falls on a Pair of Walkoffs to Mary Washington

Junior Greg Schneider fans 11 in game one; sets FSU all-time strikeout record

FREDERICKBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team endured two tough losses against Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium.
 
Frostburg (16-15, 8-10) jumped out to early leads in both games against UMW (17-7, 8-10), who won both games in walkoff fashion to clinch a spot in the 2017 CAC Baseball Tournament next week.
 
Game One
The Bobcats surrendered two runs in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-2 loss.
 
With 11 strikeouts today, junior Greg Schneider set the Frostburg all-time career strikeout record with 277. Schneider has racked up 88 strikeouts this season, a mark that leads the CAC.
 
Schneider scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run in 7.0 innings pitched.
 
Frostburg jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after junior Colton Sivic smacked a solo home run in the third. It was Sivic's sixth home run of the season.
 
Mary Washington tied the game at one in the seventh inning, but the Bobcats took the lead back in the ninth.  Freshman Jesse Lee scored senior Cody Harman with a single to right for a 2-1 lead.
 
Mary Washington tied the game in the ninth and eventually won the contest with a David Slupek single that gave the Eagles a 3-2 victory.
 
Game Two
Frostburg suffered a similar fate in the nightcap, dropping the second game 8-7.
 
The Bobcats grabbed a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. Senior Brad Garrant brought home both of the Bobcat runs in the first inning with a two-RBI single that scored juniors Logan Corrigan and Matt Bougourd.
 
Frostburg added a pair of runs in the second inning. Junior Evan Colon scored Harman for a 3-0 lead and junior Kyle Burger plated Colon for a 4-0 advantage.
 
Mary Washington responded with a six-run third inning to take a 6-4 lead. Frostburg added three more runs on the afternoon while the Eagles scored one to make the score 7-7 heading to the ninth inning.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Cody Beacorn singled and advanced to second on an error by the Bobcats third baseman, which allowed Ramsis Ruiz to score the game-winning run.
