WINCHESTER, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team suffered a 7-5 defeat to top-ranked Shenandoah in a non-conference matchup Thursday afternoon at Bridgeworth Field.
Frostburg (16-14) tied the game at two in the third inning, but Shenandoah (26-2) countered back with five-straight runs to seal the victory.
Senior Brad Garrant continued his torrid pace at plate against the Hornets, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a double.
Garrant has led the way offensively for the Bobcats over the last five games, going 15-for-20 at the plate (.750 BA) with three home runs, 14 RBI and four doubles. His six home runs are tied for fourth in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) and he has recorded at least one hit in 10 consecutive games.
Garrant gave the Bobcats their first run of the game with a homer to left that cut the Hornets lead to 2-1. In the third, junior Matt Bougourd cracked a double down the right field line to score junior Evan Colon and tie the game at two.
Frostburg responded from the Hornets five-run outburst with two runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Matt Jeffery hit a single to center and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed Bougourd and junior Kyle Burger to score, making the score 7-4.
Frostburg notched its final run of the afternoon in the eighth inning when Burger scored on a wild pitch and trimmed the Hornets edge to 7-5.
Shenandoah added one more run in the home half of the eighth inning to make the score 8-5.
Junior Logan Corrigan (1-2) made the start on the mound. He allowed 12 hits and seven runs (six earned) in 4.2 innings pitched. Juniors Dan Richardson, Dan Ryzcek and Jeffery combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
For the Hornets, Reeves Lowery (2-0) earned the victory after allowing five runs on six hits in 7.2 innings pitched. Tyler Hott earned the save after he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, April 15 for a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) road doubleheader against Mary Washington. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
