FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team fell behind early and could not rally in a 20-8 defeat to Marymount (Va.) in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) game Wednesday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.
Frostburg (16-13, 8-8) collected eight runs on 13 hits. Marymount (Va.) (14-15, 8-8) notched 20 runs on 16 hits.
Frostburg scored multiple runs in three separate innings, while the Saints scored multiple runs in four separate innings.
Marymount took control of the game early with eight runs in the first inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Luke Tyree put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to right.
The Bobcats plated three runs in the home half of the first, cutting the saints lead to 8-3. Senior Brad Garrant singled home senior JT Tipton for the Bobcats first run. Later in the inning, junior Matt Jeffery singled to right and advanced to second on an error, which allowed Garrant and junior Kyle Burger to score.
After Marymount plated one run in the third, the Bobcats scratched three more runs across in the fourth inning to make the score 9-6 MU.
Frostburg looked to claw back into the game in the seventh inning. Senior Brad Garrant smacked a home run to left, his fifth of the season, to cut the score to 12-8 in favor of the visitors. Marymount quickly squashed any hopes of a Frostburg comeback in the top of the eighth when Conner Hall hit a towering grand slam to left to make the score 16-8.
The Saints continued to pour it on with four more runs in the ninth inning for a 20-8 lead.
Frostburg will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon against top-ranked Shenandoah. First pitch for the road contest in Winchester, Va. is set for 4:00 p.m.
