NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Emani Byrd and sophomore Morgan Cavey each scored two goals but Christopher Newport used a big scoring run that covered both halves to defeat Frostburg, 18-7, Saturday afternoon.
Byrd scored two first-half goals and Cavey helped Frostburg to a second-half surge that trimmed the Bobcat (5-7, 2-2) deficit to 12-7 with 16:16 to play in regulation. Christopher Newport (9-4, 3-1) responded by scoring the game's final six goals to carry the final to 18-7.
CNU also used an eight-goal scoring run to pull away from Frostburg in the first half. Byrd scored at 25:22 and again at 16:33 as Frostburg hung tough and brought its deficit to 4-3 on Byrd's second tally.
CNU then found the net eight-straight times that stretched nearly 10 minutes into the second half, extending its lead to 12-3. Meaghan Galvin scored the final goal of the first half for Christopher Newport as it led 9-3 at intermission and she scored the first goal of the second half.
Sophomore Nikki Hallikas ended the host's run with her only goal of the afternoon at 20:57 for a 12-4 score. Freshman Molly Biggers further narrowed the gap to 12-5 before Hallikas found Cavey for a goal at 17:15 and a 12-6 score.
Senior Molly Hart finished off the afternoon for Frostburg with a goal at 16:16.
Hallikas finished the game with three assists, one goal, four draw controls and three ground balls. Both Cavey and Byrd scored two goals on two shots each, while senior keeper Dylan Teitelbaum made 17 saves, her second highest total of the spring.
Galvin paced CNU with five goals and three assists, while Catie Chess notched four goals.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday, April 5, when it hosts Southern Virginia at 4:00 p.m.
