Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Wesley

DOVER, Del. – The Frostburg State softball team earned a convincing doubleheader sweep of Wesley in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Saturday afternoon at DuPont Field.
 
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 13-9 overall and 4-0 in CAC play. Wesley sits at 14-10 overall behind a 2-4 mark in conference play.
 
Game One
Frostburg came out strong in game one, posting an 11-2 victory against the Wolverines in six innings. The Bobcats notched a season-high 15 hits, with five players recording multiple hits in the contest.
 
Senior Emily Zengel finished the day with three hits and a career-high six RBI.
 
Senior Hannah Tavik had her second game of the season with three hits this afternoon. She finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
Frostburg took control after a scoreless first inning with a six-run scoring outburst that spanned from innings two through four. The Bobcats began the scoring run in the second inning, when Zengel cracked a two-RBI double to left center that scored juniors Allison Short and Brittney Platt.
 
Zengel extended the Frostburg lead to 5-0 in the third with a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to left field. Frostburg added another run in the fourth inning, making the score 6-0.
 
Wesley looked to rally late with two runs in the fifth inning, but the Bobcats put the game away in the top of the sixth inning with five more runs, making the score 11-2. Freshman Kaitlyn Griffin began the inning with a two-RBI single, while Zengel, freshman Claire Hanlon and senior Jessica Dubbs all had run-scoring singles in the sixth.
 
Short (7-4) earned the victory after allowing just four hits and two earned runs in six inning. Short finished the day with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
 
Game Two
The Bobcats picked up right where they left off in game two with a 10-0 win over Wesley in five innings.
 
Junior Kristen Catlin went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. Platt and Dubbs each went 2-for-3 at the dish in game two.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Catlin hit a two-RBI single to right that plated Platt and Griffin.
Frostburg did most of its damage offensively in the third inning, where they scored five to take an 8-0 lead. Senior Emily Harvey plated the Bobcat's first run of the inning with a double down the right field line, giving FSU a 3-0 advantage. Griffin, the next batter, singled to right center to score two and give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Zengel hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Bobcats their sixth run of the game and Catlin scored Platt with a single to make the score 7-0.
 
Frostburg added three more runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
 
Tavik (5-1) earned the victory with a five-inning shutout. She finished with four strikeouts and allowed just one hit. 
 
Up Next
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow with a CAC doubleheader against Salisbury. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
