YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State softball team opened its CAC schedule with a sweep of York (Pa.), Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (11-7, 2-0 CAC) took game one 1-0 and posted another shutout in game two with a 6-0 victory. Frostburg now has four shutouts in its last six games and has won six straight.
The pitching duo of senior Hannah Tavik and junior Allison Short nearly pitched no-hitters on Monday in a sweep on Bridgewater and the tandem almost accomplished the feat against the Spartans (10-8, 0-2).
In the opener, Short tossed all 7.0 innings and struckout out seven batters, while allowing just two hits. She fanned two hitters in the second and third innings and never allowed a runner past second base. The win is her sixth on the season and is her fifth straight. During the stretch, she has allowed just four hits.
Meanwhile, Tavik also tossed all 7.0 innings and struckout six batters, while allowing just two hits. The win over the Spartans is her third straight.
Game One
Thanks to the gem from Short in the circle, the Bobcats needed just one run to earn the win. Freshman Kaitlyn Griffin led the team with two hits, while senior Emily Zengel and Short each posted one.
Frostburg threatened in the fifth when Griffin led off the frame with a single down the fight field line. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Brittney Platt and she reached third on a fielding by the York infield. However, she was stranded at third.
In the seventh, Griffin again led off the inning with a single to center before sophomore Olivia Ford came on as a pinch runner. Ford swiped second base and scored when Short singled up the middle.
Game Two
Unlike game one, the Bobcats got on the board quickly with four runs in the first. Senior Jessica Dubbs singled to short, Tavik singled to third two batters later and Dubbs scored the first run when senior Emily Harvey doubled to right center.
Griffin plated the second run when she singled up the middle allowing Tavik to cross the plate. Sophomore Ali Caulkins grounded out to the shortstop that scored Harvey and freshman Claire Hanlon singled home the final run when she scored Griffin.
The Bobcats tacked on their final two runs in the second inning. Zengel scored on a single from Griffin and Tavik crossed home on a fielding on the outfield.
Griffin finished with two RBI and was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dubbs and Harvey also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Harvey drove home one. Tavik was 2-for-4 with two runs and moved within seven hits of Frostburg's all-time record.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they face No. 18 Kean at 12:00 pm.
