WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg State softball team used a combination of solid pitching and some high-powered offense to defeat Catholic in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.
Game One
Frostburg won its third consecutive game with a 4-1 victory over Catholic in game one. Junior pitcher Allison Short (5-3) tossed a complete game and earned the win, allowing just three hits and one earned run on the afternoon.
Frostburg had four different players tally an RBI, scoring two runs in the second and fifth innings.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Short got the Bobcats on the board with a single through the left side that scored senior Emily Harvey. Two batters later, junior Sam Gatton plated senior Emily Zengel to give the Bobcats the 2-0 edge.
Catholic responded with its only run of the game in the fourth inning, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Frostburg notched the final two runs of game run in the fifth inning. Senior Hannah Tavik doubled to right center, scoring freshman Claire Hanlon. Sophomore Ali Caulkins brought home Tavik with a fly out to left, putting the Bobcats up 4-1.
Game Two
Frostburg (9-7) followed up its impressive game one performance by taking game two over Catholic (8-6), 10-3.
Freshman Kaitlyn Griifin led the way offensively for the Bobcats with two hits, a walk and two RBI. Zengel drew three walks on the afternoon and Tavik finished the day with three runs scored.
Tavik was also effective in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing a complete game in which she surrendered just three earned runs with four strikeouts.
Frostburg began the game with four runs in the top of the first. Tavik cracked a single to score sophomore Olivia Ford for the Bobcats first run of game two. Tavik would later score the Bobcats second run after Griffin drew a walk, giving Frostburg a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Harvey scored on a wild pitch and Caulkins scored on a walk.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth inning when Caulkins hit a single to left field, scoring Tavik. Frostburg continued applying the pressure offensively in the fifth inning, notching two more runs for a 7-0 advantage.
Frostburg finished the day with three runs in the seventh inning. Catholic scored its three runs on nine hits, finishing game two with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the seventh.

Frostburg will return to action Saturday, March 25 for a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) road contest against York (Pa.). First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.
