Men’s Lacrosse Rally Comes Up Short At No. 6 York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the fourth quarter to pull to within one at the final horn in a slim 6-5 defeat to No. 6 York (Pa.), Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Spartans (9-1) scored the fourth quarter's first goal to push their lead to 6-2 with 10:27 to play.
 
Bobcat senior Kyle Horak won the faceoff at 10:27 and Frostburg (5-3) started its run just over a minute later when freshman Paul Ruppert scored off an assist from junior Keegan Colegrove as the visitors trailed just 6-3.
 
At 5:03, Frostburg scored again to make things 6-4 when freshman Jake Bowling scored an unassisted tally. Bowling had a shot at 5:36 sail wide of the net before connecting on the goal 33 seconds later.
 
With time winding down, senior Alex Phillips caused a turnover with just 1:45 showing and the Bobcats raced to the other end of the field as junior Adam Gross found Ruppert for the Bobcats' third goal of the fourth that cut the deficit to 6-5.
 
However, the Spartans won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock for the win.
 
The loss ends a three-game winning streak that had lifted the Bobcats into the receiving votes portion of the week five USILA poll. Meanwhile, the win is the fifth straight for York.
 
York and Frostburg traded goals in the first quarter. Cameron Leech opened the scoring for YCP at 12:29, while senior Chris Santina scored off a feed from junior Quinn Western 22 seconds later for Frostburg that tied things at 1-1.
 
York scored the game's next four goals, including the first of the third quarter as it led 5-1. Western found Gross late in the third that pulled the Bobcats to within 5-2. Leech scored again for York, this time with 10:27 left in the fourth prior to Frostburg's comeback.
 
Frostburg entered the contest with the nation's 11th stingiest defense (6.14 goals per game) and the Bobcats held the Spartans to just six goals despite them entering the game with a 13.44 goal per game average. YCP held a narrow edge in shots 28-26 and starting keeper Landry Marshall stopped 16 Frostburg shots, including 11 in the first half.
 
Ruppert (two goals), Western (two assists) and Gross (one goal, one assist) each finished with two points. Horak won 9-of-15 faceoffs, while freshman keeper Jack Marks notched eight saves.
 
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday when they visit Marymount at 1:00 pm.
