Baseball Surges Past Southern Virginia

The Bobcats racked up a season-high 24 hits in Monday’s matchup.

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team posted a 20-2 win over Southern Virginia in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats (9-8, 2-3 CAC) turned in their ninth double-digit hit total of the season against the Knights (8-16, 2-4 CAC), putting up a season-high 24 in Monday's victory. The hit total is the second highest in school history, and is just three hits shy of tying the all-time school record of 27, set back in 1988 against Christopher Newport.

It was also the most runs scored by the Bobcats this season and the fifth time with 10 or more in a game.

Junior Matt Bougourd exploded for three hits and a career-high seven RBI after smacking a double and the first two homers of his career. Bougourd cracked a double to left field in the first inning, and followed it up with homers in the fourth and fifth innings.

Junior Kyle Burger and senior JT Tipton also posted three-hit games. Frostburg had 13 different players collect at least one hit on the afternoon.

Junior Daniel Richardson put together a solid outing on the mound. He tossed six innings, allowing six hits and just two earned runs.

After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third. Bourgourd hit a double to left field, scoring seniors Brad Garrant, Cody Harman and Tipton. Junior Logan Corrigan was the next batter and pushed the Bobcat lead to 4-0 with a single to center field, scoring Bougourd.

Frostburg continued its scoring onslaught with multiple-run innings in the fourth and fifth to take a commanding 15-2 lead. In the fourth, junior Colton Sivic belted his second home run of the season to put the Bobcats up 5-0.

After a sacrifice fly from Garrant put the Bobcats up 6-0, Bougourd delivered his first-career homer in the fourth, a two-run shot that scored junior Matt Jeffery and extended the Bobcats advantage to 8-0. Bougourd struck again in the fifth, connecting on another two-run homer that scored Jeffery.

The Bobcats concluded the scoring with one run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth inning. Junior Garrett Wiles pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 22 when they travel to Marymount (Va.). First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
