Balanced Scoring Attack Propels Women’s Basketball to Victory Over SVU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Five players scored in double figures for the Bobcats as the women's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia 84-79 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
 
Senior forward Kirsten Rayner notched a team-high 18 points on 5-of-12 (41.6%) shooting. Rayner went 8-of-10 (80%) from the foul line and added eight rebounds and four assists.
 
Senior guard Kache Fields finished with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds. Junior guard Sharyce Warren poured in 15 points, notched four assists and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs and junior guard Adjowa Pinkrah added 10 points each.
 
Frostburg (10-12, 8-7) shot 31-of-74 (41.9%) from the field while Southern Virginia (3-19, 0-15) finished 29-of-59 (49.2%) from the field.
 
The Bobcats held a 24-18 edge in assists and outrebounded the Knights by one (40-39). The Bobcats also doubled the Knights in points off turnovers (26-13).
 
Southern Virginia began the game on an 8-3 run, but the Bobcats responded with six straight points to take a 9-8 lead with 4:46 left in the first quarter.
 
Frostburg ended the first quarter with an 11-2 scoring run over the final 2:33 of the quarter. The run started with a three-point field goal and layup from Fields and was capped with layups from Warren, Emory and Pinkrah. Frostburg led the Knights 24-10 after one quarter.
 
The Bobcats used a 13-0 run early in the second quarter to balloon their lead to 19 and make the score 37-18 with 4:40 remaining in the half. Rayner made six consecutive foul shots to cap the Bobcat scoring run.
 
Sophomore guard Megan Kelly drained a three-pointer with just two seconds remaining in the half, and the Bobcats took a 42-30 lead at the half.
 
Rayner made a layup with 5:00 remaining in the quarter to put the Bobcats up by 13. Frostburg maintained a double-digit lead for much of the third quarter, but two straight threes from Southern Virginia cut the Bobcat lead to six and made the 61-56 at the end of the frame.
 
A foul shot by Southern Virginia cut the Bobcat lead to three points, but Frostburg would once again go up double digits with a layup from Diggs. Southern Virginia would respond and trim the Bobcat lead to just one point with 1:07 remaining. Diggs would make four foul shots down the stretch to seal the victory for the Bobcats.
 
Shelby Winsor notched a game-high 29 points for the Knights while Meredith Ouellette added 25.  
 
Frostburg will continue CAC play on the road this Saturday, February 11 against St. Mary's (Md.) at 2:00 p.m.
