Softball Drops Season’s First DH

ASHLAND, Va. – Frostburg softball dropped a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon, Saturday, with a 3-2 loss in game one and a 5-4 in the nightcap.
 
Junior Allison Short and sophomore Ali Caulkins suffered the losses in the circle. Short falls to 1-2 overall after allowing three earned runs on six hits in the first game, while Caulkins is 0-2 after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in the second.
 
Game One
Senior Jessica Dubbs posted two hits to lead the Bobcats (2-4). Senior Hannah Tavik and junior Sam Gatton each finished with one hit.
 
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) scored all three of their runs in the third inning on a three-run home run from Harley Jones with two outs.
 
Frostburg left three runners on base in the fifth inning and finished with two hits, but didn't crack onto the scoreboard until the sixth.
 
Freshman Kaitlyn Griffin reached base on an error by the RMC infield and she later scored while senior Selina Matulonis reached base on another infield error. Frostburg further narrowed its deficit in the seventh and pulled to within one run.
 
Dubbs walked to lead off the frame and later stole second base. Caulkins later drove in Dubbs with a run-scoring ground out.
 
Game Two
Frostburg scored first in the second contest of the DH and Tavik got things going when she reached base on an error. Caulkins then singled to right field scoring Tavik for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Yellow Jackets retook the lead in the bottom of the third when Brandi Mulvena scored on a fielder's choice and Diane McDaniel singled home a run for a 2-1 edge.
 
Randolph-Macon made it 3-1 when Kerstin Roth singled home Casey Abernathy in the fourth.
 
Both teams plated two runs in the fifth. FSU tied things up with its two runs in the top of the fifth when Gatton scored on an error by the catcher and Tavik later singled home Dubbs to knot things at 3-3.
 
In the home half of the inning, Jones doubled home Savannah Wood and Jen Balcom singled home Jones as the hosts led 5-3.
 
FSU attempted a rally in the sixth, and with two outs, Gatton singled home Claire Hanlon that narrowed the score to 5-4.
 
Neither team scored in their final at-bat setting the final at 5-4.
 
Gatton led the Bobcats with three hits, while Dubbs had two. Gatton, Tavik and Caulkins each drove in a run.
 
Frostburg returns to action next weekend at the Beach Blast at Virginia Beach starting with a contest against Manhattanville on Friday at 2:00 pm.
