FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Frostburg State baseball team overcame some early pitching struggles and battled back for an impressive 11-3 victory over Montclair State Saturday afternoon at J.P. Riddle Stadium in North Carolina.
Junior pitcher Greg Schneider allowed two runs in the first and one in the second, but worked his way through six full innings, striking out six and limiting the Red Hawks to just two hits after the second.
Frostburg (5-2) racked up 11 runs on eight hits. Montclair (0-3) scored its three runs on seven hits, but committed six errors on the day.
The Bobcats tallied runs in the second and third innings and took took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Junior Logan Corrigan, senior JT Tipton, junior Matt Bougourd and freshman Nick Bass all crossed home to put the Bobcats in front, 4-3, through three innings.
Frostburg also plated three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Bobcats strung those two innings together after some sloppy defense by Montclair State. Junior Matt Jeffery provided the Bobcats with their final two runs of the afternoon, doubling to left and scoring senior Cody Harman and junior Kyle Burger.
Junior Matt Jeffery recorded two hits on the afternoon, Burger, Bougourd and Tipton scored two runs each.
It was smooth sailing for the Bobcat pitching staff after the second inning, as the combination of Schneider, junior Mike Takovich and Trenton Eirich held the Red Hawks scoreless for the final seven innings of the afternoon.
Frostburg will return to action in North Carolina tomorrow against Ferrum. First pitch for the contest is set for noon.
