WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Frostburg softball team picked up a 10-8 win against Shenandoah in its first game on Sunday morning and capped its season-opening weekend with 5-0 a loss to Randolph.
Game 1
Frostburg senior All-American Hannah Tavik notched her first win of the season in the circle against the Hornets after striking out three and allowing just four earned runs.
Seniors Emily Harvey and Emily Zengel, along with junior Sam Gatton each drove in two runs for the Bobcats (2-2). Gatton and senior Jessica Dubbs each posted three hits to lead the team, while sophomore Ali Caulkins scored two runs.
Zengel put the Bobcats on the board in the first when she drew a bases loaded walk that scored Gatton. Two batters later, K. Griffin singled home Dubbs and Harvey later doubled home Zengel and Caulkins. Griffin made it 5-0 when she scored on an error by the Shenandoah catcher and Gatton doubled home Harvey during her second at-bat of the first inning.
SU narrowed its deficit to one run with a five-run third inning. Lindsay Corbin highlighted the frame with a two-run home run.
In the top of the fourth, FSU tacked on three more runs. Caulkins singled home senior Megan Tracey, Zengel plated Tavik with a single and B. Platt scored Caulkins for the third run and a 9-5 advantage.
The Hornets scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a single and Frostburg added one more run to its total when Gatton smacked a solo home run in the top of the fifth as the scoreboard read 10-6.
Shenandoah scored the game's final two runs in the sixth as Kristen Weadon scored on a passed ball and Corbin later singled home Breanne Smith.
Both teams finished with 13 hits in the contest.
Game 2
Frostburg suffered a loss to Randolph for the second time while in Winston-Salem as the Bobcats registered six hits, but stranded 15 runners.
Junior Allison Short struckout seven batters in 7.0 innings and allowed all five runs. Her record is now 1-1.
Dubbs led the Bobcats with two hits, while Gatton, Zengel and Harvey each had one. Frostburg stranded at least one runner all seven innings.
The Wildcats big inning came in the third when they scored four runs. Following a pair of run-producing singles, Lauren Morris hit a two-run home run.
The Bobcats return to action next Saturday with a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon starting at 1:00 pm.
