Bobcats Win Nail-Biter Over Salisbury In Regular Season Finale

FROSTBURG, Md. - Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs and junior guard Sharyce Warren combined for 31 points as the Frostburg State women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 59-57 win at home over rival Salisbury on senior day, Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bobcats improved their record to 12-13 overall and 10-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) while Salisbury dropped to 13-12 overall and 9-9 in conference. The victory locked up the fifth seed for Frostburg State in the upcoming CAC tournament.

The Bobcats shot 22-of-53 (41.5%) on the afternoon and 7-of-23 (30.4%) from beyond the arc. The Sea Gulls put together a 25-of-66 (37.9%) showing but went only 2-of-7 (28.6%) from three-point range.

Diggs and Warren were two of the three Bobcats to finish the game in double figures as freshman Amanda Emory also dropped 13 points on 6-of-8 (75%) shooting. Diggs led FSU in scoring with 16 points while shooting 5-of-15 (33.3%) from the floor, and Warren chipped in 15 points off the bench on a 5-of-11 (45.4%) afternoon.

The Bobcats came out of the gate on fire, building themselves a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter.  Diggs put the first five points on the board for FSU with a triple and a layup on her way to seven points in the opening frame. Emory accounted for the next four points and added a three-pointer late in the first quarter to account for seven points towards the Bobcats 22-8 lead after 10 minutes.

Frostburg State would open their lead to as large as 21 points midway through the second quarter before the Sea Gulls would start to find their shooting touch. Sharyce Warren tallied six points in the second quarter, but
Salisbury senior Kelsie Bacon responded with eight points of her own. SU would trim a point off the Frostburg first quarter lead but the Bobcats would still head into the locker room with a 35-22 advantage.

Salisbury would not go away in the second half. SU's leading scorer, senior Lauren Rothfeld, would notch 16 of her 19 points on the afternoon in the second 20 minutes, as the Sea Gulls would eventually claw their way back to a one-point lead with 56 seconds left to go in regulation, their first lead of the game.

After a steal, Diggs would draw a foul on SU freshman Jessie Iacobellis with 15 seconds left on the clock and would go on to hit both free throws to put the Bobcats back in front. Salisbury would turn the ball over with seven seconds left and after two Seagull fouls Warren would head to the free throw line looking to put the game on ice. Warren knocked down the first of two; Rothfeld would find the rebound and get one more opportunity that would ultimately come up short as the Bobcats survive with a two-point victory, 59-57.

FSU senior Kache Fields scored four points and added three assists in the final home game of her career while senior Kirsten Rayner was unable to play due to injury.

Frostburg State will head to York (Pa.) for the opening round of the CAC tournament on Tuesday, February 21 with the tip time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
