SALEM, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team used a seven-run outburst in the first inning to defeat Roanoke, 9-8, Sunday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
The teams combined for 17 runs and 22 hits in the nearly three and a half hour contest. Frostburg (1-2) finished with nine runs on nine hits, while Roanoke (2-1) had eight runs on 13 hits.
Junior Matt Bougourd led the way with two hits and four RBI, while freshman Nick Bass and junior Matt Jeffery had two RBI each.
Jeffery started the scoring for the Bobcats in the first inning with a double down the right field line that plated senior JT Tipton and junior Kyle Burger.
Bougourd doubled the Bobcat lead in the first inning on a single to left center. Jeffery and senior Brad Garrant scored and put FSU up 4-0.
Frostburg would tack on three more runs in the first after Bass doubled through the left side with the bases loaded. Senior Cody Harman, junior Colton Sivic and Bougourd all scored to give the Bobcats a 7-0 edge.
Ronoke responded with three runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. First baseman Craig Kiley finished the day with two hits and three RBI.
Bougourd, who was the designated hitter, continued his fine day at the plate in the fourth inning with a double to left that scored Jeffery and junior Logan Corrigan.
Junior Trenton Eirich (1-0) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief work and junior Tyler Hoffman collected the save (1) with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts.
Frostburg will return to action on Friday, February 17 against Penn State Abington. First pitch is scheduled for noon in Fayetteville, N.C.
