Baseball Falls in Season Opening Doubleheader

SALEM, Va. The Frostburg State baseball team came up short in the opening two games of the season, falling to Roanoke Saturday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Frostburg (0-2) lost game one, 10-7, and was edged in game two, 4-3.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Junior Kyle Burger drove home junior Matt Bougourd for the Bobcats' first run of the season. Senior Brad Garrant walked with the bases loaded to score freshman Nick Bass, and Burger plated the third Bobcat run on a wild pitch. The final two runs of the frame came off an error by the Maroons shortstop.

Roanoke (2-0) responded with one run in the bottom of the second, two runs in the third, and one in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game up at five. The Maroons added five more runs between the seventh and eighth innings.

Frostburg notched two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it was not enough.

Junior Logan Corrigan allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Senior Ryan Callahan (0-1) allowed three runs in one inning of relief.

Frostburg surrendered four runs on 12 hits in game two, and allowed three runs in the second inning. Junior Lane Ward (0-1) gave up four earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.

The Bobcats would respond offensively in the top of the third inning with two runs of their own. Junior Evan Colon started the inning with a single. Senior JT Tipton came to the plate and singled but advanced to second on an error by the Maroons right fielder. Colon came around to score on the error to make the score 3-1.

Tipton advanced to third on a strikeout from junior Greg Schneider, and scored just one batter later after a single from Garrant, making the score 4-2 Roanoke.

The Bobcats tacked on the final run of the day in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Garrant reached on a fielder's choice and senior Cody Harman scored to cut the Maroons lead to just one run.

Junior pitcher Garret Wiles was stellar in three shutout innings of relief. Wiles and junior Trenton Eirich, who faced the final batter of the eighth inning, combined to hold the Maroons scoreless for the final 3.1 innings.
